Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah (real name Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu) is best known in the UK as a rapper and the driving force behind the independent music company Disturbing London. At only 23 years old, he is a music superstar and a certified style icon.

He started out in the UK music scene in 2004 with the group Aftershock Hooligans but left because of personal differences with the band.

Disturbing London was conceptualized by Tinie Tempah with Dumi Oburota (his manager and cousin) to be an alternative host for young artists as well as to feature Tinie’s music in particular. Not only has Tinie managed to put out his own brand of music but he has also collaborated with other artists such as Kelly Rowland, and joined the concert tours of Rihanna and Usher in the UK. By 2011 Tinie was able to snare two Brit Awards and awards from other sources such as the BET Awards, MOBO Awards, and the Mercury Prize. In the fashion scene, he has won awards on ‘GQ best dressed man of 2012, Telegraph’s most stylish man in 2011, amongst many others.

One way he gives back to community is by featuring up and coming artists in his ‘Disturbing London’ platform. It is likely that these new artists would have been ignored and written off by the larger music labels otherwise. For youths who are interested in pursuing careers in music, Tinie Tempah’s story is proof that if you have enough talent and are willing to take risks you can really become a driving force in UK music despite your young age.
