Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is an America media proprietor, talk show host, an actress, producer and philanthropist. She was born in Mississippi, Tennessee on January 29th 1954.

She is best known for her two and a half decade as host of her own globally popular show, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’.

Oprah’s open and warm hearted personality has won her millions of viewers, fans and a very big influencing factor. She is an accomplished actress, having been nominated for an academy award for best supporting actress in the Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film, The Colour Purple.

She is often praised for overcoming adversity to become a benefactor to others. Her influence (which is sometimes referred to as the Oprah effect) contributed greatly to the publishing world. Her book club, Oprah’s Book Club gave unknown authors a voice and saw them become best sellers. Her influence also extends to turning unknown entrepreneurs to household names, such as Carol’s daughter (Body and Hair products).

Her charity network Oprah’s Angel Network raised more than $80,000,000 which went to charity programs. She also established Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As of 2012, Oprah has given over 400 scholarships to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. And most recently with her new network, The Oprah Winfrey Network-OWN (Joint venture with the discovery channel) launched in January 2011. She has had exclusive interviews, most recent one with Lance Armstrong and Jane Fonda.

Oprah is still a media powerhouse to be reckoned with.

For everyone of us that succeeds, it’s because there’s somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn’t always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school.
